INTELLIGENT INFORMATION PROCESSING IN FMS
____________________________________________________
Efficient organisation of information in an FMS can greatly improve its operating speed and effectiveness.
____________________________________________________
The development of computer networking technology has increasingly affected the information organisation used in flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs). The emergence of the distributed organisation for FMSs is facilitated by the recent popularity of the manufacturing automation protocol (MAP) and the standardisation of the cellular FMS architecture.
This text describes a distributed knowledge-based organisation for the intelligent information processing in FMSs consisting of asynchronous manufacturing cells. Within each cell there is an embedded knowledge-based system that handles the planning scheduling, and control of the manufacturing processes and makes adaptive decisions. The knowledge based in the cell-host comput- |
ers are loosely coupled by a local area network (LAN). To enforce distributed control, real-time task assignments arc carried out by a bidding process among cell-hosts.
Cellular systems1 consist of flexible cells with the cells communicating with each other through the LAN (Fig. 7). Such a cellular architecture has played an increasingly important role in the design of the fully-automated systems for many reasons; among them are reduced machine setup time, reduced tooling, the sim¬plification of planning and control, reduced in-process inventory, the near-constant load-time and system modularity.
A
new manufacturing method is presented here which emphasises incorporation of artificial intelligence (AT) technology to achieve intelligent information processing, so mat manufacturing decision-making can be completely automated. Because the key element of this method is to use AI knowledge-based systems for carrying out various facets of manufacturing decision-making, this method is sometimes referred to as knowledge-based manufacturing. |
