THE SYSTEM AND ITS OPERATION
The layout of the FMS includes five identical machining centres, two outfacing machines, a washing/drying machine, a ring fitting station and two automatic stores - one for raw materials, the other for fixtures. Each has 100 locations. There are four load/unload stations.
Palletized parts are transported between the different stations by eight automated guided vehicles.
Each machining centre has a magazine with 80 pockets but because of the size of some of the tools only about 65 can be used in each. The set of tools in each magazine is different thought all have the same set of 35 core tools which are used by 80% of the component types. The least common parts are tooled up on only one machine. In some of the machines, a touch probe is kept in |
the tool magazine, as the bores of the largest size of valve have to be probed before machining can begin.
Control of the entire installation (about 20 microprocessor-controlled devices in total) is the responsibility of a computer with the main memory and of extra data storage because of the large amount of data associated with the volumes of different components to be produced. The computer equipment is housed in an overhead control room which gives a good view of the FMS below.
Nine personnel are responsible for running the FMS at all times. On each shift, there are a system supervisor, two semi-skilled loaders/unloaders, one semi-skilled body ring fitter, two setters responsible for tool setting, tool changing and fixture servicing, an extra charge-hand setter, a maintenance electrician, and a maintenance mechanic.
Island of Automation
In the current method of operation, the FMS operates as an island of automation. At the start of a working period, the production control department produces a works order list which indicates the orders that have to be completed on the FMS in the period concerned, which parts are needed and how many of each. The system supervisor manually inputs this list to the FMS computer. The system software will assess the list, estimate suitable scheduling of work onto the FMS and inform the supervisor what utilization of the FMS and its various elements he can expect to achieve with these schedules. If the supervisor is not satisfied with the results, he can request changes. The facility gives him the opportunity to introduce emergency orders only after assessing the impact that they will have on the current throughput.
In an ideal schedule, there are about 25 pallets going through the system at all times, and 17 different components being machined. This keeps both the machining centres and the outfacing machines at optimum utilization.
Once the supervisor has given the go-ahead, the FMS computer will set the FMS into operation - the raw material stores will be informed to deliver the appropriate raw material to the load/unload station and the required fixtures will be retrieved from the fixture store and delivered by AGV to the load/unload area. A terminal informs the load/unload operators which parts to load onto which fixtures. Loaded fixtures will then be delivered to the machines and finally returned to the set-up area for unloading.
Every four hours, a planned tool stoppage period occurs when the tools which have passed their programmed life are changed. Just before the planned stoppage, the tool setters interrogate the host computer via a terminal in the tool room for those tools |
