Achievement in many cases will come through various forms of numerically controlled (NC) and computer-numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools.
So, a IMS may be thought of as an automated production system for manufacturing families of workpieces at midvolume rates. Such system might consist of several CNC machine tools tied together by a host computer or cell controller.
In other case a FMS can be called a CIM system if management information is included in the system.
Flexible manufacturing cells (FMCs), which some define as a system generally contain a small number of CNC devices, possibly an automated guided vehicle (AGV) and/or robot, inspection system, and cell controller. An FMC makes it possible to expand a system at a growth rate. For example, a cell-by-cell approach (or FMC approach) is the path many manufacturers follow now. It is necessary to note that for smaller manufacturing plants the FMC approach can provide the necessary productivity results with rather small investment in FMC equipment.

VISIT TO THE EXHIBITION
A group of Soviet specialists had an opportunity to view the level of technology and technical trends in the FMS at the exhibition in Paris, France.
They have spent particularly lots of time in watching the fulls-cale FMSs industrial robots, cells, tools, measuring equipment and others. They had a chance to visit the FMS show which enabled them to learn more about recent technical trends in the FMS. The numerous examples of linked machines at the show demonstrated that suppliers have at last found their feet and arc-now presenting a product to the user that looks very buyable.
In fact, most of the machine-tool companies now have a standard approach to solving an FMS requirements. Most have devel¬oped their own software package and pallet/tool transfer systems. Few companies have demonstrated linked machines with more than two or three machines. They tended to show models of recently installed systems. For example, the Renault Automation showed eight robots performing gearbox assembly, spot welding, sealant application and workpiece handling.
The newest and most interesting aspect of the stand, however, was the communications system. A MAP broadband network. linked via a number of gateways to a LAC baseband network, was in operation. The MAP local area network enables data collection |
on the assembly lines for the maintenance of quality. The LAC baseband network interfaced with all the robots and machine tools on the stand.
Another company named SAGEM demonstrated a variety of approaches to FMS ranging from the portable personal computer (PC) for eliminating paper tape to a cell solution using a supervisory computer and LAC local area network.
For the first time SAGEM showed a range of machine tools from the UK company Beaver. The demonstration showed CNC CAD/CAM linked up to a Beaver machining centre so that a component could first be designed and then machined.
Unlike companies such as Renault Automation and Mandelli, Huron Graffenstaden has developed a standard approach to the PMS. The solution being offered can incorporate up to six machiming centres of a range of sizes, two auxiliary stations such as measuring and washing, 48 buffer stations and automatic changing of complete tool magazines. A variety of CNC systems is offered on the machines.
Realmeca, a French company demonstrated an example of its roach to FMS. The very special feature of the Realmeca males is that they are designed for very small parts, the cell on the id machines workpieces fitting within a 200 mm cube.
Italian machine-tool company Mandelli showed models of two of the large FMS installations the company has delivered. One of them will incorporate four machining centres arranged in a line, h machine will have a 72-port tool magazine and a CNC system. A rail-guided vehicle running in front of the machines will transfer palletised parts between the machines and a row of 10 et stands and two load/unload stations. At the rear of the males, a tool store with more than 250 tools in it and a gantry devuce will provide automatic replacement of worn tools. A supervisory computer will coordinate the operation of the FMS.
The FMS solution for small components was first show at previous exhibition two years ago. The FMS shown consists of cell which can incorporate up to five machines, one of which is a coordinate measuring machine. The pallet shuttle which trans-palletised components between pallet stands and the males has a speed of 1.5 m/s. The shuttle can also be used to deliver fresh tools to the machine. Each machine has 32 tools in its magazine. A special fixture can hold 10 tools on a single pallet. The time to transfer all 10 to a machine is less than two minutes, so it is more cost-effective than incorporating an additional machine.
At the exhibition was also shown a new AGV that is designed 10 be highly flexible. It could change both workpieces and sets of tools. It was to have a 1.2 m vertical lift as well as moveable forks that could handle varying width of pallet. |
