One of the companies has found the solution to the FNS which could include up to six machining centres of a range of sizes, two auxiliary stations such as measuring and washing, 48 buffer stations and automatic changing of complete tool magazines. A variety of CNC systems is offered on the machines.
At the Paris exhibition the Italian machine-tool company SIGMA showed a flexible manufacturing cell incorporating vertical machining centres. The cell included three vertical machining centres, each equipped with a SIGMA controller, pallet shuttle, pallet stands, two load/unload stations and supervision by an FC with SIGMA software.
It should be stressed that all the cells mentioned above ha horizontal pallet storage. A novel approach was taken in which 14 pallets were stored in a vertical system which obviously has the advantage of reduced floor space.
Comau, perhaps the most active Italian company in the field of FMS was also present at the Paris exhibition. It showed A model of a very large FMS. The system will be used to machine three types of 16-valve cylinder heads. It includes four-axis horizontal machining centres, two rotary head-changing machine one equipped with nine heads, the other with 12; two coordinate measuring machines; two robotised three-stage washing machines and four AGVs. The AGVs will not only transfer pallets of pans around the system but will also deliver fresh tools to the machining centres.
Thus, judging by the stands shown the exhibition was large n scale and was full in content. Regarding business negotiations there were inquiries and a number of contracts were concluded.

UNMANNED NIGHT OPERATION WITH A LASER FMS
A full-scale operation of a sheet metal laser cutting FMS was put into operation at the sheet metal plant. This FMS greatly reduced costs and streamlined production of frames and designed panels for NC units, robots, etc.
The control system, from nesting to line control is linked with the production management system through a DNC system.
The production of the plant has changed recently from the basic products, such as motors, magnetic switches and transformers to mechatronics equipment including programmable controllers inverters, laser cutting machines and NC units. These new product groups account for 60% of the total products at present. Hence, the plant concentrates considerable power on the research and development of those products. Establishing a flexible production |
system as well as product development system is particularly important to deal with the mechatronics equipment which is affected by diversified user needs and their short developmental cycles.
For instance, the plant has already built FMS lines at its own facilities. Those are the sheet metal laser cutting FMS, sheet metal FMS, sheet metal welding/assembling line, industrial machinery FMS, automatic small-sized motor assembling line, small-sized motor shaft machining FMS, automatic electronic parts inserting FMS, and automatic magnetic switch assembling line, etc.
The sheet metal laser cutting FMS at the sheet metal plant was built some years ago. Using the features of laser cutting machines to the maximum, the FMS was designed to streamline the machining of complicated components such as frames and design panels for NC units, machine spindle controllers, inverters, and robots. Also, the FMS is used as a model line for expanding sales of laser cutting machines, the main products of mechatronics department.
The sheet metal laser cutting FMS is operating at the sheet metal plant which also contains another FMS consisting of two turret punch presses, a welding/assembling line and a painting line.
The FMS using turret punch presses started operation. Its
automated processes have achieved labor saving of more than 20 employees and reduction in cutting time to one-fifth. The FMS line using laser cutting machines has been designed to further strengthen cost competitiveness, add higher values to the products, and cope with diversified user needs and shorter deliverytime.
Laser cutting machines have greater advantages than turret punch presses. Those are (1) less clamping allowances, fewer scraps generated in process, and material yields improved 5% to 6%; (2) greater effect on complicated-shape parts with wide machining range in part shape and sheet thickness; (3) uniform kerf and fewest burrs on cut surfaces, and suitability for design parts; (4) cost reduction due to no need of dies; (5) less noise and faults caused by vibration; (6) higher pitch and dimensional accuracy (less than one-fifth).
The system consists of three C02 laser cutting machines. Acceptable workpiece thickness ranging from 0.6 to 9.0 mm, machining accuracy of ±0.02 to -±0.1 mm, table size of 1,200 mm x 1400 mm, one automated guided vehicle (track-type motor-driven, two-staged fork type), one automatic sorter and one mate¬rial stocker (2 tons x 6 stages, with built-in vacuum).
