INTEGRATING EDUCATION AND ENGINEERING
One of the American Institutes of Higher Education possesses a centre for computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) education. The Institute's latest acquisiton is a machining cell. The area where the Institute is located is, in fact, rich in manufacturing industry whose specialists provide students for the Institute's courses and industrial consultancy for the faculty.
The Department of Engineering is responsible for all CIM subjects. At any one time the department has the students taking courses in engineering-related topics. On offer are courses in mechanical, production and computer-aided engineering, special courses in industrial systems technology. There are part-time and full-time students. All part-time students arc likely to be employed by local industry.
In addition, the department runs short courses at frequent intervals. Usually held in the evenings in six sessions, the short courses are aimed specifically at the needs of industry. The topics of the courses are: industrial robots, concepts and programming; an introduction to CAD/CAM through basic programming; and an introduction to microprocessors, CNC and robotic principles.
The range of equipment available at the Institute for practical hands-on training now extends from the very basic to the extremely sophisticated. For the elementary aspects of the courses, members of staff have set up a flexible cell based mainly on training equipment. It includes a CNC milling machine, a gauging station, a CNC lathe, a linear handling system, and a CAD/CAM work station. Control of the cell is affected with a microcomputer which many of the students are already likely to have had experience of using at school.
The new flexible cell that was installed not so long ago and represents the most sophisticated of manufacturing technology. It will serve three main roles. Firstly, third year students will use it for project work. Secondly, members of staff will use it to carry out subcontract work for local industry. Finally, it will be used for research and development projects in collaboration with industry.
In a recent demonstration, the cell was shown automatically machining billets (заготовка, болванка). The billets were taken from a loading station by the robot using its double gripper. The robot loaded the billet first lo the turning centre, entering through the rear of the machine, and then side-loaded it to the machining centre before returning it to the loading station.
